Insects and other living things in a natural grass lawn are of two varieties. One is surface, and the other is subsurface.

Maintenance of a lawn generally requires periodic treatment to control at least the surface variety of insects. Surface insects generally feed on either the grass or the minerals and nutrients on the surface of the ground. fibers are not a food source, and the ground surface is protectively covered by Backing and In-Fills.

Eventually, precipitation and air-borne particles will deposit some minerals and nutrients sufficient to support insect life. Such will never, however, in the use-full life of the product, reach the levels that natural grass and earth regularly sustains. The lack of potential of surface insect populations reduces dramatically the necessity of insecticides and treatments of any form or variety.

Nevertheless, egg laying, larvae producing insects will not find the or its In-Fills to be a hostile environment. The insects will lay their eggs. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending upon the point of view, there is little to eat and the larvae make easy pecking for birds in the In-Fills materials. To this extent an Turf installation can be said to control the insect population while enhancing the lifestyle of feathered friends.

On the other hand, and, while limiting and controlling the potential of surface insect infestations, does nothing to inhibit or harm the ecology of subsurface life in the way of insects, worms, and other organisms inhabiting this nocturnal space. In fact, can be said to improve this life by protecting the subsurface from harmful and drying sunlight and enhancing the humus environment on which such life is dependent. Years after its being laid, could be rolled back to expose an extremely rich top soils.
